Dr. González-Sarmiento obtained his degree in medicine from the University of Salamanca in 1979. He gained his PhD in medicine at the University of Salamanca in 1985. He has been a specialist in Haematology andDr. González-Sarmiento obtained his degree in medicine from the University of Salamanca in 1979. He gained his PhD in medicine at the University of Salamanca in 1985. He has been a specialist in Haematology and Haemotherapy since 1985. He was awarded a Fullbright fellowship at the Lab. of Medicine and Pathology, Minneapolis Minnesota, USA, where he worked from 1985 to 1987. He then received a grant to return to Spain where he worked at the Department of Medicine of the University of Salamanca from 1988 to 1989. He was also an EMBO fellowship-holder at the Lab. of Molecular Biology, Cambridge Univ., UK, in 1990. Afterwards, he became a tenured professor in medicine (1989-1998). Dr. González-Sarmiento has worked on the study of gene rearrangements and the characterisation of chromosomal translocations in haematologic neoplasms, and has later become involved in the cloning and characterisation of new genes involved in tumour genesis.
