Dr. Miguel Vicente Manzanares Vicente Manzanares

Tumor biophysics

Biography

Miguel Vicente-Manzanares was born in Salamanca in 1973. He obtained his degree in Chemistry from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain, in 1996. He started his graduate studies in 1997 at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain, under the scientific direction of Prof. Francisco Sánchez-Madrid. His Thesis work focused on the elucidation of signaling pathways that mediate cellular shape remodeling during chemotaxis. This work led to a PhD in 2002.

Dr. Vicente-Manzanares moved to the U.S. in 2004 to work as a post-doc and then Research Scientist at the University of Virginia under the direction of Dr. Rick Horwitz. There, he identified mechanisms that control cellular polarity during cell migration, and the specific roles of non-muscle myosin II isoforms in a variety of cellular phenomena.

In 2011, Dr. Vicente-Manzanares returned to Spain as an Assistant Professor of the Universidad Autónoma School of Medicine, Department of Medicine, and develops his research at the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria-Princesa, in downtown Madrid.

In 2017, he moved to Salamanca, Spain, to start the laboratory of tumor biophysics at the Instituto de Biologia Molecular y Celular del Cancer.

Dr. Vicente-Manzanares has published more than 60 articles in top journals in the field of Cell Biology, including Nature Cell Biology, Journal of Cell Biology, Journal of Cell Science, etc., which have received over 7000 references.

As an independent researcher, Dr. Vicente-Manzanares has been awarded three Plan Nacional research grants (2011, 2014, 2017), a Marie Curie Early Career Grant (2011) and two prestigious grants from the Fundación Ramón Areces (2012) and BBVA (2014).

Prof. Vicente Manzanares is the coordinator of one subject of the Masters course in Biology and Clinical aspects of Cancer from the USAL: "CELL ADHESION AND MIGRATION IN CANCER", which deals with the cellular and molecular bases of metastasis, and participates in another subject: "ANTI-TUMOR IMMUNOTHERAPY".
