Mercedes Dosil Castro

Ribosome synthesis and cell growth


Biography

Mercedes Dosil is a senior research scientist at the Centro de Investigación del Cáncer (CSIC/University of Salamanca). After receiving a B.S. in biology at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), she earned a Ph.D. from the same University. Her thesis focussed on cloning and gene expression of proteins isolated from thymic cells.

She went on to do a postdoc at Princeton University (U.S.A.) with Ihor Lemischka, working on the functional and biochemical characterization of kinases and phosphatases specific of hematopoietic stem cells. After this, she joined the laboratory of James Konopka at the State University of New York, Stony Brook (U.S.A) and worked (1997-2000) on the structural analysis of a G-protein coupled receptor in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. 

Mercedes Dosil was part of the research team of Xosé R. Bustelo at the Centro de Investigación del Cancer of Salamanca during 2000-2001. In 2002 she initiated her independent line of research, that is focussed on the functional characterization of proteins required for ribosome biogenesis, with a special interest on their integration with the rest of molecular processes needed for cell growth. Currently she is associate professor (Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) of the University of Salamanca.
